Common patterns

Cognate object: (うた)(うた)う repeats the same kanji and sounds redundant in English, but it is the normal Japanese phrasing whenever the song is not otherwise specified. With a named song the object simply replaces it.

In Japan, カラオケ is a popular pastime, so this verb is commonly used. A person who sings professionally is a 歌手(かしゅ).
