Used when someone laughs, from a light chuckle to hearty laughter.
みんな(わら)いました。
Everyone laughed.
面白(おもしろ)くて(わら)ってしまった。
It was so funny that I couldn't help laughing.

2. to smile
Can also mean to smile, though 微笑む (hohoemu) is more specifically 'to smile.'
彼女(かのじょ)いつも(わら)っている。
She is always smiling.
にこにこ(わら)っている(あか)ちゃん
A baby smiling cheerfully.
She smiled gently and said 'It's okay.'
He's smiling in the photo, isn't he?
I like your smiling face the best.

TRANSITIVITY: 自動詞(じどうし) (intransitive). No pair verb. Pattern: X(わら)う (X laughs).

ASPECT: ている indicates ongoing action or habitual state. (わら)っている = 'is laughing/smiling.'
