Usage

やさしい covers two meanings that are written with different kanji. 優(やさ)しい describes a person, a manner, or a gesture as kind and gentle; 易(やさ)しい describes a task or text as easy. Both are used before a noun (優(やさ)しい人(ひと)) and as a predicate (母(はは)は優(やさ)しい). In casual writing the kana spelling やさしい is common for both, and only context tells them apart.
