親切(しんせつ) is a na-adjective: 親切(しんせつ)な (before nouns), 親切(しんせつ)だ/です (predicate), 親切(しんせつ)じゃない (negative). The kanji literally mean 'close + cut' - the idea of being close enough to someone to help them. Can also be used as a noun: 親切(しんせつ) (kindness).
