to climb, to go up, to ascend
Used for climbing mountains, hills, stairs, or any upward movement. Takes the particle を to mark what is being climbed, or に for the destination.
TRANSITIVITY: 自動詞 (intransitive). No pair verb. Pattern: Xに/を登る (climb X).
ASPECT: ている indicates ongoing action. 登っている = 'is climbing.'
COMMON PATTERNS:
- 山に登る (climb a mountain)
- 階段を登る (go up stairs)
- 富士山に登る (climb Mt. Fuji)
- 木に登る (climb a tree)
Kanji 登 means 'climb/ascend'. For general upward motion, 上がる is also used. Opposite: 下りる (go down).
