Used for climbing mountains, hills, stairs, or any upward movement. Takes the particle を to mark what is being climbed, or に for the destination.

Every summer I climb mountains with friends, but this year the weather was bad so I couldn't go.

TRANSITIVITY: 自動詞(じどうし) (intransitive). No pair verb. Pattern: Xに/を(のぼ)る (climb X).

ASPECT: ている indicates ongoing action. (のぼ)っている = 'is climbing.'

COMMON PATTERNS:

Kanji 登 means 'climb/ascend'. For general upward motion, ()がる is also used. Opposite: ()りる (go down).
