1. old-fashioned word for a Western-style umbrella
A somewhat dated term for an ordinary Western-style umbrella, as opposed to a traditional Japanese paper umbrella. Named for its ribbed shape, which resembles a bat's wings when open, though largely replaced by 傘(かさ) in everyday speech.

To put up an umbrella.

"Koumorigasa" is an old word that is rarely used nowadays.

Usage

An old-fashioned synonym for 傘(かさ), from the resemblance of an open umbrella's ribs to a bat's wings (蝙蝠(こうもり) = bat). Mostly heard from older speakers; younger speakers simply say 傘(かさ).
