umbrella
A device used to protect from rain or sun. In Japanese, the same word covers both rain umbrellas and parasols.
傘 refers to both rain umbrellas and parasols/sunshades.
TYPES:
- 雨傘: rain umbrella
- 日傘: parasol, sunshade
- 折りたたみ傘: folding umbrella
- ビニール傘: vinyl/plastic umbrella
COMMON EXPRESSIONS:
- 傘を差す: to hold up an umbrella

CULTURAL NOTE:
Transparent vinyl umbrellas are ubiquitous in Japan and sold cheaply at convenience stores. 傘立て (umbrella stands) are common at entrances to buildings.
