To organize an event.
会議(かいぎ)(ひら)く。

We plan to hold an exhibition next month.
講演会(こうえんかい)(ひら)いて、(おお)くの(ひと)(あつ)まった。

(ひら)く has two main meanings: (1) to open something physical, and (2) to hold/organize an event.

DON'T CONFUSE (all use (ひら/あ)):

  • (ひら)く: to open (formal), to hold events
  • ()く: to open by itself (intransitive)

  • 会議(かいぎ)(ひら)く: to hold a meeting

REGISTER:
(ひら)く sounds more formal/literary than ()ける for physical opening. For events, (ひら)く is the standard choice.
