For people or things to come together in one place. The gathering happens naturally or voluntarily—this is the intransitive form (things gather themselves).
Transitivity: 自動詞 (intransitive). Pair: 集める (transitive, to collect/gather something). Pattern: Xが集まる (X gathers).
Aspect: ている indicates resulting state. 集まっている = 'are gathered' (state), not 'are in the process of gathering.'
Common patterns
