For people or things to come together in one place. The gathering happens naturally or voluntarily—this is the intransitive form (things gather themselves).
(ひと)(あつ)まった。
People gathered.
公園(こうえん)(ひと)(あつ)まっています。
People are gathered in the park.
に marks the location where gathering occurs
Next week, my friends will gather at my house for a party.
2. to be collected, to accumulate
For things like money, information, or materials to be gathered or accumulated in one place.
お金(おかね)(あつ)まった。
The money was collected.
募金(ぼきん)たくさん(あつ)まりました。
A lot of donations were collected.
Information can now be gathered quickly on the internet.

TRANSITIVITY: 自動詞(じどうし) (intransitive). Pair: (あつ)める (transitive, to collect/gather something). Pattern: Xが(あつ)まる (X gathers).

ASPECT: ている indicates resulting state. (あつ)まっている = 'are gathered' (state), not 'are in the process of gathering.'

COMMON PATTERNS:
