(おお)い is an i-adjective meaning "many" or "much."

IMPORTANT GRAMMAR:

(おお)い usually cannot directly modify nouns. You cannot say × (おお)(ひと). Instead:

  • (ひと)(おお)い: there are many people (predicative)
  • (おお)くの(ひと): many people (attributive, using くの form)
  • たくさんの(ひと): many people (alternative)
