夏(なつ)は日(ひ)が長(なが)くて夕方(ゆうがた)まで明(あか)るいので、子(こ)どもたちは遅(おそ)くまで外(そと)で遊(あそ)んでいる。
In summer the days are long and it stays light until evening, so the children play outside until late.

日(ひ) means day and sun—one of the most common kanji with multiple readings.
