For something wet to become dry. Intransitive verb used for laundry, surfaces, etc.

服(ふく)が乾(かわ)きました。

The clothes dried.

ペンキがまだ乾(かわ)いていません。

The paint hasn't dried yet.

Since the weather is nice, I think the clothes I put outside will dry quickly.

The laundry won't dry easily.

髪(かみ)が乾(かわ)いた。

2. to be thirsty

When used with 喉(のど) (throat), means to be thirsty: 喉(のど)が乾(かわ)いた.

喉(のど)が乾(かわ)いています。

I'm thirsty.

Literally 'my throat is dry'

Please give me water. I'm thirsty.

I'm thirsty so I want a drink.

I get thirsty when I exercise.

Eating spicy food makes me thirsty.

TRANSITIVITY: 自動詞(じどうし) (intransitive). Pair: 乾(かわ)かす (transitive, to dry something). Pattern: Xが乾(かわ)く.

ASPECT: ている indicates resulting state. 乾(かわ)いている = 'is dry' or 'has dried.'
