(のど) refers to the throat. The kanji (のど) is complex, so it is frequently written in hiragana as のど.

COMMON EXPRESSIONS:

  • (のど)(かわ)く: to be thirsty (literally 'throat dries')
  • (のど)(いた)い: to have a sore throat
  • (のど)(あめ): throat lozenge/drop
  • (のど)()まる: to choke, to get a lump in one's throat
  • (のど)(うるお)す: to wet one's throat, to have a drink

PROVERB:
(のど)もと()ぎれば(あつ)さを(わす)れる — 'Once past the throat, one forgets the heat.' Equivalent to 'Danger past, God forgotten.'

NOTE:
In Japanese, thirst is expressed as a throat sensation ((のど)(かわ)いた), not a stomach or body feeling as in some other languages.
