KANJI NOTE:
Written 風邪(かぜ) — same reading as (かぜ) (wind) but different kanji. The (じゃ) character means "evil/harmful."

COMMON EXPRESSIONS:

  • 風邪(かぜ)()く: to catch a cold (the standard expression — uses ()く, not かかる)
  • 風邪(かぜ)(なお)る: to recover from a cold
  • 風邪(かぜ)気味(ぎみ): feeling a bit under the weather
  • 風邪(かぜ)(ぐすり): cold medicine
  • 風邪(かぜ)()きやすい: prone to catching colds

CULTURAL NOTE:
In Japan, wearing a mask (マスク}) when you have a cold is standard etiquette. The phrase お{大事(だいじ)に (take care) is the customary response when someone says they have a cold.
