1. to rest

Transitivity: 自動詞(じどうし) (intransitive) for both senses. Sense 2 takes を for the place/thing one is absent from, like 家(いえ)を出(で)る (leave home) — the object marks a point of separation, not something acted on. No pair verb.

Aspect: ている indicates ongoing state. 休(やす)んでいる = 'is resting' or 'is off (work/school).'
