To absorb moisture from the air or surroundings, becoming damp or soggy. Used for objects, air, or conditions becoming humid or wet.

USAGE:
A godan verb (五段動詞) ending in -ru. Not to be confused with the ichidan verb ()める (to close) or ()める (to tighten). Often used in the ~ている form to describe a current damp state.

The transitive counterpart is 湿(しめ)らせる (to dampen, to moisten).

COMMON COLLOCATIONS:
