1. to differ, to be different

To not be the same.

違(ちが)う means to differ or to be wrong—a very common verb with two distinct uses.

ASPECT (ている):

Plain 違(ちが)う already describes a state, so 違(ちが)う and 違(ちが)っている both mean 'is different / is wrong'. 違(ちが)っている often points at one item that departs from what it should be: 電話番号(でんわばんごう)が違(ちが)っています (the phone number is wrong). The plain 違(ちが)います is the standard polite denial 'no, that's not right.'

Watch out

違(ちが)う is a verb, not an adjective: negative 違(ちが)わない, past 違(ちが)った. The adjective-like 違(ちが)くない and 違(ちが)かった are heard in casual speech but are nonstandard.
