adoption
The legal act of establishing a parent-child relationship between people who are not related by birth. In Japan it is used not only for children but often for adults, for example to continue a family name or a family business.
From 養子 (adopted child) + 縁組 (forming a family tie, by marriage or adoption).
Common collocations
- 養子縁組をする: to adopt
- 特別養子縁組: full adoption of a young child, which ends the legal tie with the birth parents
- 養子縁組届: adoption notification form
Cultural note
Most adoptions in Japan are of adults. A common case is 婿養子: a husband adopted into his wife's family, taking its surname to carry on the line.
