ガム

ガム (from English "gum") refers specifically to chewing gum. The full form チューインガム exists but is rarely used in everyday speech.

COMMON EXPRESSIONS:

• ガムを噛(か)む: to chew gum
• ガムを吐(は)き出(だ)す: to spit out gum
• 風船(ふうせん)ガム: bubble gum
• ガムシロップ: gum syrup (liquid sweetener for iced coffee)

NOTE ON ガムテープ:
ガムテープ means packing tape or duct tape, not tape made of gum. This is a wasei-eigo (Japanese-coined English) term that surprises learners.

CONFUSABLE WORD:
ゴム means rubber — a completely different word despite the similar sound. Do not confuse ガム (gum) with ゴム (rubber).
