The way of reporting speech or thought in writing, including direct and indirect speech in grammar.
Types
- 直接話法: direct speech (quoting exactly)
- 間接話法: indirect speech (reported speech)
- 描出話法: free indirect speech
Usage
A grammar term, met mostly in language classes (English grammar in Japanese schools teaches 話法の転換). Outside grammar it can also mean a way or technique of talking, as in セールス話法 (a sales pitch technique).
