1.
leaving a message on read, read-ignoring
Reading someone's message (as shown by the read receipt) but not replying. Originally associated with LINE's 既読 (read) indicator, now used broadly for any messaging app.
既読スルーされた。
I was left on read.
既読スルーしないでよ。
Don't leave me on read.
忙しいだけかもしれないけど、既読スルーが続くと不安になる。
They might just be busy, but if the read-ignoring continues, it makes me anxious.
COMPONENTS: 既読 (already read) + スルー (through, from English "through" meaning to ignore/let pass).
Originated with the LINE messaging app, which shows 既読 next to messages that have been read. Used with する: 既読スルーする.
RELATED TERMS:
- 未読スルー — ignoring a message without even reading it
- 既読がつく — to get a read receipt
- スルーする — to ignore, to let something pass
This phenomenon has become a significant source of social anxiety, especially among younger people, as it implies the recipient saw the message but deliberately chose not to respond.
