1. to be fit for, to be able to fill a role, to manage a duty

To be capable of fulfilling a role, position, or responsibility. Often used in negative form to express that someone is not up to the task.

私(わたし)にはこの役(やく)は務(つと)まらない。

I'm not fit for this role.

彼(かれ)なら部長(ぶちょう)が十分(じゅうぶん)務(つと)まるだろう。

He should be well-suited for the position of department head.
