A tall perennial grass native to Japan with silvery plumes. It is a symbol of autumn and is traditionally displayed during the moon-viewing festival (tsukimi).
すすきが風(かぜ)に揺(ゆ)れている。
The silver grass is swaying in the wind.
月見(つきみ)にはすすきを飾(かざ)る。
We decorate with silver grass for moon viewing.
秋(あき)の高原(こうげん)には一面(いちめん)のすすきが広(ひろ)がり、銀色(ぎんいろ)に輝(かがや)いていた。
The highland in autumn was covered with silver grass, shining silver.

The kanji form is 薄(すすき) or 芒(すすき), but hiragana or katakana (ススキ) is more common.

Cultural note

すすき is one of the 秋(あき)の七草(ななくさ) (seven grasses of autumn) and is closely associated with 月見(つきみ) (moon viewing). It is traditionally displayed alongside 月見団子(つきみだんご) during the mid-autumn festival.
