USAGE:

来日(らいにち)する is used specifically for foreigners coming to Japan. For Japanese people going to other countries, different compounds are used:

  • 訪米(ほうべい): visiting the US
  • 訪中(ほうちゅう): visiting China
  • 訪韓(ほうかん): visiting Korea

COMMON COLLOCATIONS:

  • 来日(らいにち)公演(こうえん): Japan tour/performance
  • 来日(らいにち)観光客(かんこうきゃく): tourists visiting Japan
  • (はつ)来日(らいにち): first visit to Japan
  • 来日(らいにち)(ちゅう): during one's stay in Japan

PATTERN:
The (らい) + country pattern is productive: 来日(らいにち) (come to Japan), 来米(らいべい) (come to the US, less common), etc. This pattern takes the perspective of someone in the destination country.
