Usage
- Functions as a な-adjective and adverbially with に.
- Originally referred to mismatched footwear (left and right shoes that didn't go together), and the imagery of two things that should be a pair but aren't still pervades the word.
- Can describe physical objects, conversations, responses, impressions, or coordination between people.
- Modifier: ちぐはぐな対応 (an inconsistent response), ちぐはぐな服装 (a mismatched outfit), ちぐはぐな印象 (a disjointed impression)
- Adverbial: ちぐはぐに動く (to move out of sync)
- Predicate: 話がちぐはぐだ (the story doesn't add up); 上下がちぐはぐだ (the top and bottom don't go together)
