ちぐはぐ

ちぐはぐ describes things that should match or coordinate but don't — out of sync, mismatched, or oddly inconsistent.

Usage

• Functions as a な-adjective and adverbially with に.
• Originally referred to mismatched footwear (left and right shoes that didn't go together), and the imagery of two things that should be a pair but aren't still pervades the word.
• Can describe physical objects, conversations, responses, impressions, or coordination between people.
• Modifier: ちぐはぐな対応(たいおう) (an inconsistent response), ちぐはぐな服装(ふくそう) (a mismatched outfit), ちぐはぐな印象(いんしょう) (a disjointed impression)
