自動改札 is the automatic ticket gate found at train and subway stations. Composed of 自動 (automatic) + 改札 (ticket inspection/gate).
FULL FORM:
The official name is 自動改札機 (automatic ticket gate machine), but 自動改札 is the standard short form.
HOW IT WORKS:
- Insert a paper ticket into the slot, or tap an IC card on the reader
- The gate opens if the fare is valid
- IC cards (Suica, PASMO, ICOCA, etc.) are now the most common method
