A subway or underground rail system. In Japan, most familiar from 東京(とうきょう)メトロ, the main operator of Tokyo's underground network, but also used for subways in other cities, particularly overseas.
東京(とうきょう)メトロに乗(の)る。
Take the Tokyo Metro.
パリのメトロは切符(きっぷ)が安(やす)い。
The Paris metro has cheap tickets.
駅(えき)から会社(かいしゃ)まではメトロで二駅(ふたえき)しかかからない。

From French/English 'metro' (short for 'metropolitan railway'). In Japan, more often heard in 東京(とうきょう)メトロ than as a standalone word — for subways generally, 地下鉄(ちかてつ) is the more common term.
