A junior academic rank at a Japanese university, below 准教授(じゅんきょうじゅ) (associate professor). The position carries both teaching and research duties.
大学(だいがく)の助教(じょきょう)になった。
She became an assistant professor at the university.
彼(かれ)は医学部(いがくぶ)の助教(じょきょう)として研究(けんきゅう)を続(つづ)けている。
He continues his research as an assistant professor in the medical faculty.
助教(じょきょう)から准教授(じゅんきょうじゅ)に昇進(しょうしん)するには業績(ぎょうせき)が必要(ひつよう)だ。

A rank introduced in Japan's 2007 university reforms, replacing the older 助手(じょしゅ) for research-and-teaching staff.
