A formally imposed restriction forbidding some activity. Standalone use is largely confined to set expressions; the kanji is more commonly seen in compounds such as 禁止 (prohibition) or 禁酒 (abstaining from alcohol).
禁を犯す。
To violate a ban.
長年の禁がついに解かれた。
The long-standing ban was finally lifted.
政府は特定の薬物に禁を課している。
The government has imposed a ban on certain drugs.
Mostly used in set expressions; everyday writing usually prefers the compound 禁止.
