In baseball, the number of bases a batter gains on his own hit: one for a single, two for a double, three for a triple, and four for a home run. The total, 塁打数, is used to compute slugging percentage. Also the base of compounds such as 二塁打 (double) and 本塁打 (home run).
Measures bases gained by hitting rather than the number of hits; most often used as 塁打数 (total bases).
