An astronomical eclipse, in which one celestial body is wholly or partly hidden by another. A literary or technical term that most often appears in compounds such as 日蝕(にっしょく) (solar eclipse) and 月蝕(げっしょく) (lunar eclipse); the modern everyday spelling uses 食(しょく).
