1. Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan
Japan's largest freshwater lake, in Shiga Prefecture northeast of Kyoto. Named for its resemblance to the 琵琶(びわ) (biwa, a lute), it is a major water source for the Kansai region and a well-known scenic and historical site.
