1. to peel off; to come off; to fade (of paint, coating, color)
For a surface layer such as paint, coating, plating, or color to come away or wear off, leaving the base exposed. Intransitive: the layer comes off by itself rather than being removed by someone.
ペンキが()げる。
The paint peels off.
(かべ)塗装(とそう)()げてきた。
The paint on the wall has started to peel.
長年(ながねん)使(つか)って、(なべ)のコーティングが()げてしまった。
After years of use, the pot's coating has peeled off.

TRANSITIVITY:
()げる is intransitive—a coating or color comes off on its own. The transitive pair is ()がす (to peel/strip something off). The near-synonym ()がれる also intransitive, but tends to describe a sheet-like layer lifting away, while ()げる stresses coating, plating, or color wearing off and fading.

ASPECT (ている):
()げている describes the resultant state—the surface is now bare where the layer has come off.

COMMON COLLOCATIONS:

  • (いろ)()げる: the color fades/comes off
  • メッキが()げる: the plating comes off; figuratively, someone's true nature shows through
  • 日焼(ひや)けが()げる: a suntan peels

NOTE:
Do not confuse with the homophone 禿()げる (to go bald), which is written with a different kanji.
