A person who is good at and fond of sports, not necessarily a professional; the word carries an image of being fit, cheerful and fair-minded.
兄(あに)はスポーツマンだ。
My older brother is athletic.
彼(かれ)はいかにもスポーツマンらしく爽(さわ)やかだ。
He's fresh and clean-cut, a real sportsman.
学生時代(がくせいじだい)はスポーツマンだった父(ちち)も、今(いま)ではすっかり運動不足(うんどうぶそく)だ。
My father was a keen athlete in his school days, but now he gets hardly any exercise.

Used of amateurs as much as professionals, and sometimes of women too, though スポーツウーマン exists. A competitor in a contest is 選手(せんしゅ).
