A person who rents a house or room from a landlord. Old-fashioned, best known from the set pair 大家(おおや)と店子(たなこ) (landlord and tenant); in modern use 入居者(にゅうきょしゃ) or 借(か)り手(て) is usual.

The 店(たな) is an old word for a rented dwelling. The saying 大家(おおや)といえば親(おや)も同然(どうぜん)、店子(たなこ)といえば子(こ)も同然(どうぜん) ("a landlord is like a parent, a tenant like a child") reflects the close Edo-period relationship.
