April Fools' Day
April 1, the day when people play harmless tricks and tell jokes as lies. In Japanese the word names the day itself, not the person fooled.
Borrowed from English "April Fool" but used for the day. An older Japanese name is 四月馬鹿.
Common collocations
- エイプリルフールの嘘: an April Fools' lie or prank
- エイプリルフールの企画: an April Fools' stunt (by a company or website)
Watch out
The English sense "a person who is fooled" does not carry over; エイプリルフール always means the day.
