〜位(い) follows a number to give a place in a ranking or competition.

Common collocations

• 一位(いちい): first place
• 二位(にい): second place
• 三位(さんい): third place
• 上位(じょうい): high rank, upper level
• 下位(かい): low rank, lower level
• 順位(じゅんい): ranking, order
• 何位(なんい): what place/rank?

Watch out

• ～位(い) is a rank in a result or ranking (一位(いちい) = first place); ～番(ばん) is a number in a sequence or order (一番(いちばん), 三番(さんばん)目(め)).
• The same kanji is read くらい / ぐらい when it means "about, approximately" (十分(じゅっぷん)位(ぐらい)); in that sense it is usually written in kana.
