Losing a match, an election or a war is written with the homophone 敗(やぶ)れる: 試合(しあい)に敗(やぶ)れる, 選挙(せんきょ)に敗(やぶ)れる, 決勝(けっしょう)で敗(やぶ)れる. The transitive 破(やぶ)る, however, is the normal verb for defeating someone (相手(あいて)を破(やぶ)る).
