bag, sack
A flexible container made of paper, plastic, or cloth used for carrying or storing things.
Types
- レジ袋: plastic shopping bag (from the checkout)
- 紙袋: paper bag
- ビニール袋: plastic bag
- 手提げ袋: carrier bag with handles
- 寝袋: sleeping bag
Watch out
In compounds 袋 usually becomes ぶくろ (レジ袋, 紙袋). お袋 is a different word: a man's casual way of referring to his own mother.
Counting patterns
Empty bags are counted with 枚. 袋 is itself a counter for bagfuls: ひと袋 (one bag of), 二袋 (two bags of).
Cultural note
Since July 2020 stores in Japan charge for plastic bags, so cashiers ask 袋はいりますか (Do you need a bag?), and many shoppers carry an エコバッグ (reusable bag).
