(さぎ) is a general term for herons and egrets.

Common types in Japan:

  • 白鷺(しらさぎ) (white egret) - includes great egret, little egret
  • 青鷺(あおさぎ) (grey heron)
  • 五位鷺(ごいさぎ) (night heron)

白鷺城(しらさぎじょう) is another name for 姫路城(ひめじじょう) (Himeji Castle), due to its white walls resembling a white heron in flight.
