鷺 is a general term for herons and egrets.
Common types in Japan:
- 白鷺 (white egret) - includes great egret, little egret
- 青鷺 (grey heron)
- 五位鷺 (night heron)
白鷺城 is another name for 姫路城 (Himeji Castle), due to its white walls resembling a white heron in flight.
