To rise to an upright position on one's feet. The opposite of 座(すわ)る (to sit).

立(た)ってください。

Please stand up.

ずっと立(た)っています。

I've been standing the whole time.

ここに立(た)ってもいいですか。

May I stand here?

I was standing on the train. I got tired.

The teacher came, so everyone stood up. We greeted the teacher.

2. to be built, to be located

Can describe buildings or structures being in a location.

あそこに木(き)が立(た)っている。

A tree stands over there.

A building stands in front of the station.

A house stands on top of the mountain.

A new store was built here. It's beautiful.

An old temple stands in this town. It has been here for three hundred years.

TRANSITIVITY: 自動詞(じどうし) (intransitive). No pair verb. Pattern: Xが立(た)つ (X stands).

ASPECT: ている indicates resulting state. 立(た)っている = 'is standing' (in standing position).

COMMON PATTERNS:

Opposite: 座(すわ)る (to sit).
