to sit down, to take a seat
To lower oneself into a seated position. Can be on a chair, on the floor, or any surface.
TRANSITIVITY: 自動詞 (intransitive). No pair verb. Pattern: Xに座る (sit on/in X).
ASPECT: ている indicates resulting state. 座っている = 'is sitting' (not 'is in the process of sitting down').
COMMON PATTERNS:
- 椅子に座る (sit on a chair)
- 床に座る (sit on the floor)
- ここに座ってください (please sit here)
- 正座する (sit formally on knees)
Opposite: 立つ (to stand). Japanese sitting styles include 正座 (on heels) and あぐら (cross-legged).
