Care leave vocabulary

介護休暇(かいごきゅうか) is leave taken to care for family members who need nursing care.

Two types of care leave

• 介護休暇(かいごきゅうか) - short-term care leave (typically up to 5 days per year)
• 介護休業(かいごきゅうぎょう) - long-term care leave (up to 93 days total)

Cultural note

As Japan's population ages, 介護休暇(かいごきゅうか) has become increasingly important. The law allows employees to take leave to care for:

• Parents
• Spouse
• Children
• Other family members needing care

介護離職(かいごりしょく) (leaving work due to care responsibilities) is a growing social issue, which is why the government promotes 介護休暇(かいごきゅうか) and 介護休業(かいごきゅうぎょう).
