Types

• 正社員(せいしゃいん): regular full-time employee with no fixed term
• 契約社員(けいやくしゃいん): employee on a fixed-term contract
• 派遣社員(はけんしゃいん): agency worker, employed by a staffing agency and sent to the client company
• パート / アルバイト: part-time worker (パート often for adults, アルバイト often for students)
• 嘱託(しょくたく): fixed-term employee, often someone rehired after retirement

業務委託(ぎょうむいたく) (freelance contracting) is often listed alongside these on job sites, although it is strictly not employment.
