Also written 容体(ようだい), the spelling most newspapers use. The reading ようたい also exists but is less common.

Usage

Said of someone who is seriously ill or injured, by doctors, family and the news (容態(ようだい)が急変(きゅうへん)する, "the condition suddenly changes for the worse"). For a minor illness such as a cold, say 具合(ぐあい) or 調子(ちょうし).
