コンプレックス comes from English "complex" (as in "inferiority complex") and is used almost exclusively to mean a personal insecurity or hang-up.

COMMON PATTERNS:

  • Xがコンプレックスだ: X is my insecurity
  • コンプレックスを()つ: to have a complex
  • コンプレックスを克服(こくふく)する: to overcome a complex
  • コンプレックスを(かん)じる: to feel insecure

SIMILAR WORDS:

  • 劣等感(れっとうかん): inferiority complex (more formal, psychological term)
  • ()(): feeling of inferiority, sense of inadequacy

NOTE:
Unlike English, where "complex" can refer to any psychological complex (Oedipus complex, etc.), Japanese コンプレックス almost always means an inferiority complex or personal insecurity. The full term 劣等感(れっとうかん)コンプレックス is rarely used because the meaning of inferiority is already implied.
