バツイチ

Usage

A casual, somewhat lighthearted term. Not typically used in formal or official contexts, where 離婚歴(りこんれき)がある is preferred. Similarly, バツニ (twice divorced) and バツサン (three times divorced) exist but are less common.

Cultural note

The バツ (×) is usually explained as the × once drawn through a name in the paper family register (戸籍(こせき)) when a marriage ended. イチ means "one," so バツイチ literally means "one ×."
