バツイチ
ばついち
noun
once-divorced
1.
once-divorced, having one divorce
A colloquial term for a person who has been divorced once. Can be used as a noun or as a modifier with の.
彼はバツイチだ。
He's been divorced once.
バツイチで子ども二人を育てている。
She's divorced and raising two children.
最近はバツイチでも気にしない人が増えてきた。
Recently, more people don't mind dating someone who's been divorced.
USAGE:
A casual, somewhat lighthearted term. Not typically used in formal or official contexts, where 離婚歴がある is preferred. Similarly, バツニ (twice divorced) and バツサン (three times divorced) exist but are less common.
CULTURAL NOTE:
The バツ (×) refers to the × mark placed on a person's name in the family register (戸籍) when a marriage is dissolved. イチ means "one," so バツイチ literally means "one ×."
COMMON COLLOCATIONS:
- バツイチ子持ち (divorced with children)
- バツイチ同士 (both divorced)
