Usage

A casual, somewhat lighthearted term. Not typically used in formal or official contexts, where 離婚歴(りこんれき)がある is preferred. Similarly, バツニ (twice divorced) and バツサン (three times divorced) exist but are less common.

Cultural note

The バツ (×) refers to the × mark placed on a person's name in the family register (戸籍(こせき)) when a marriage is dissolved. イチ means "one," so バツイチ literally means "one ×."
