A counter used for carriages or cars of a train. Used to indicate the number of cars in a train set or to identify a specific car.

この電車(でんしゃ)は十(じゅう)両(りょう)だ。

This train has ten cars.

The front car is the first car.

To handle the morning commute rush, they increased the train from eight cars to twelve cars.

両(りょう) is a counter for train cars or railroad carriages.

2: 二両(にりょう)　　7: 七両(ななりょう)

No irregular sound changes occur with this counter.

Watch out: In historical dramas 両(りょう) is also the old gold coin unit (千両(せんりょう), a thousand ryō).
