サービスエリア

サービスエリア (often abbreviated SA) refers to large rest facilities along Japanese expressways (高速道路(こうそくどうろ)). These are a key part of long-distance driving in Japan.

Typical features

• ガソリンスタンド: gas station
• レストラン / フードコート: restaurant or food court
• 売店(ばいてん): shops selling 土産(みやげ) (souvenirs) and 名産品(めいさんひん) (local specialties)
• トイレ / 休憩所(きゅうけいじょ): restrooms and rest areas
• 駐車場(ちゅうしゃじょう): parking lot

• サービスエリア (SA): larger, full-service facilities with gas stations and restaurants
• パーキングエリア (PA): smaller rest stops with restrooms and vending machines

Cultural note

Many SAs have become tourist destinations in their own right, famous for regional food and unique souvenirs. Some feature hot springs, observation decks, or local craft shops.
