Something being completely ruined or made worthless. Used when effort, plans, or something of value is destroyed or wasted.
せっかくの計画(けいかく)が台無(だいな)しになった。
The carefully made plan was ruined.
雨(あめ)で旅行(りょこう)が台無(だいな)しだ。
The rain ruined the trip.
あの一言(ひとこと)で楽(たの)しかった雰囲気(ふんいき)が全部(ぜんぶ)台無(だいな)しになってしまった。
That one remark completely ruined the fun atmosphere.

Very often used with せっかく (with effort, specially) to express frustration that something done with care or effort has been wasted. Common patterns: 〜が台無(だいな)しになる (something gets ruined) and 〜を台無(だいな)しにする (to ruin something).
